You are comparing professional laser projectors and find an RJ45 laser projector that lists Ethernet or network control on the specification sheet.
That sounds promising.
If your lighting system already runs through a network, it is easy to think:
“Great. I can plug it into my switch, control it from grandMA over Art-Net, and QuickShow should see it too.”
Not necessarily.
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when reading a laser projector specification.
An RJ45 port tells you what type of physical connection is present. By itself, it does not tell you whether the projector supports Art-Net, sACN, Pangolin FB4 networking, proprietary Ethernet control, an interlock function, or something else.
Art-Net itself is a specific protocol for transporting DMX512 and RDM lighting data over Ethernet. Ethernet and Art-Net are therefore related, but they are not interchangeable terms.
For a buyer, the useful question is not:
Does this laser have RJ45?
It is:
What exactly can I do through that RJ45 port?
To answer that, you need to look at the connector, network protocol, controller hardware, software or lighting console, and the type of control the system actually provides.

Quick Answer: Does RJ45 Mean Art-Net?
No. An RJ45 connector does not automatically mean a laser projector supports Art-Net.
The easiest way to separate the terms is:
  • RJ45 = physical connector
  • Ethernet = network infrastructure
  • Art-Net / sACN = lighting-control protocols used over IP networks
  • FB4 = dedicated laser-control hardware
  • QuickShow / BEYOND = professional laser control software
  • DMX-style control = fixture parameters such as intensity, color, position or cue selection
  • Laser-content workflow = logos, graphics, animations and laser-show programming
A projector can support one of these without automatically supporting all of them.
Before buying an RJ45 laser projector, confirm the protocol, controller hardware, software compatibility and what type of data or commands the network connection actually carries.

1. Does an RJ45 Port Mean a Laser Projector Supports Art-Net?
No.
RJ45 describes the physical connection. Art-Net describes the language being used to move lighting-control data across a network.
That difference sounds simple, but it has a major effect on purchasing.
A projector may have an RJ45-style connection associated with:
  • Art-Net
  • sACN
  • another Ethernet-based control system
  • manufacturer-specific communication
  • an interlock or safety function
  • another dedicated purpose
So if the product specification only says:
RJ45
the compatibility question has only started.
A Real Example: Starshine A10
The current Starshine A10 6W Laser Light Show Projector specification lists:
  • RJ45 In/Out
  • DMX In/Out
  • ILDA In/Out
  • 10CH / 18CH DMX
  • App control
The same page describes the RJ45 connection as signal support, but it does not currently identify that RJ45 port specifically as Art-Net or sACN.
That distinction matters.
If your production requirement says:
“The projector must accept Art-Net from our lighting console.”
seeing RJ45 In/Out is not enough.
The next question should be:
Which protocol does the RJ45 port use?
That one question can prevent you from buying a projector that has the physical connector you expected but not the network workflow your system requires.
2. RJ45, Ethernet, Art-Net, sACN and FB4: What Is Actually Different?
The easiest way to understand professional laser control is to stop putting all of these terms into one category.
Think of the system in five layers.

This five-layer model is useful because many compatibility mistakes come from jumping directly from the first layer to the last.
For example:
“It has RJ45, so it must have FB4.”
That conclusion skips the network, protocol and controller questions.
The same applies to:
“It has Ethernet, so QuickShow should detect it.”
QuickShow network control depends on compatible laser-control hardware and the correct operating mode—not merely the shape of the connector on the back panel. Pangolin's current FB4 documentation, for example, specifically distinguishes BEYOND/QS Ethernet control from Art-Net fixture control and other operating modes.
The connector is not the workflow.
3. Ethernet vs Art-Net: Why Does the Difference Matter?
Once you know the RJ45 port really is used for Ethernet, there is still another question:
What protocol is running over that network?
Ethernet gives devices the network infrastructure they need to communicate.
Art-Net is one specific protocol that uses standard networking technology to move DMX512/RDM lighting data across that network.
For a buyer, this has a very simple practical consequence.
If a specification says only:
Ethernet Control
keep asking.
You may need Art-Net while the projector may use a completely different network system.
This becomes especially important when a rental company, club or festival already has a standardized show network and expects every new device to integrate into it.
4. Art-Net vs sACN: Which One Does Your Laser Need?
There is no useful universal answer to:
“Is Art-Net better than sACN?”
A much better question is:
Which protocol does my existing system use?
Art-Net is designed to transport DMX/RDM lighting data over Ethernet. sACN, commonly associated with ANSI E1.31, provides another standardized method of transporting DMX512 data over IP networks. The current published version is ANSI E1.31-2025, approved January 5, 2026, and it includes both IPv4 and IPv6 support.
For most buyers, you do not need to study packet structures to make the right decision.
If Your System Already Uses Art-Net
A projector or controller with confirmed Art-Net support can fit naturally into an existing lighting network.
For example:
Lighting Console → Network Switch → Moving Heads / Media Devices / Laser Controllers
If Your Venue Uses sACN
Then the projector or controller needs explicit sACN/E1.31 compatibility.
Do not infer it from the presence of Ethernet or RJ45.

If You Are Running One Small DJ Rig
This is where technical specifications can become more complicated than the actual show.
If you have:
  • one laser
  • a short cable run
  • a basic DMX controller
  • no large lighting network
  • no professional graphics workflow
then neither Art-Net nor sACN may be particularly important.
A straightforward DMX laser may already do everything you need.
5. What Can Art-Net Actually Control on a Laser Projector?
This is where buyers often expect too much from the word “network.”
If a laser projector or controller provides an Art-Net fixture profile, a lighting console may be able to control parameters such as:
  • intensity
  • color
  • pattern or cue selection
  • X/Y position
  • size
  • rotation
  • movement
  • strobe
  • effect parameters
The exact controls depend on the device, controller and fixture profile.
Selecting an existing laser graphic is not the same thing as creating that graphic.
“We Have grandMA3. Can We Project Our Client's Logo?”
This is a realistic corporate-event question.
A buyer may tell the supplier:
“We use grandMA3 and need RJ45 because we want to project sponsor logos.”
An experienced supplier should not immediately answer:
“Yes, Art-Net works.”
There are several separate questions hidden inside that request.
Question 1: Can the Projector Receive the Console's Protocol?
Does the projector or controller actually support Art-Net, sACN or whatever the show network is sending?
Question 2: What Can the Console Control?
Does the fixture profile provide:
  • cue selection?
  • position?
  • size?
  • color?
  • effect controls?
Question 3: Where Does the Logo Come From?
This is the part that is often overlooked.
A realistic workflow may be:
  1. The logo is prepared in dedicated laser control software.
  2. The artwork or cue is stored or made available through the laser controller.
  3. The lighting console selects, triggers or manipulates that content.
That is very different from expecting grandMA itself to generate any arbitrary laser logo and transmit the complete laser artwork simply because the projector accepts Art-Net.
Pangolin documents this distinction clearly in FB4: its Art-Net mode exposes a fixture profile and plays content stored on the FB4's SD card, while QuickShow/BEYOND uses a separate Ethernet-based FB4 workflow for laser control and content transfer.
For a real buyer, understanding that difference is far more useful than memorizing another networking definition.
6. DMX vs Art-Net: What Actually Changes for a Laser Operator?
Traditional DMX remains popular because it is straightforward.
A simple setup may look like:
Console → DMX Cable → Laser
Select the fixture mode, assign a DMX address and control the available channels.
For a mobile DJ, wedding ballroom or small club, that may be all that is needed.
Art-Net changes how that DMX-style information is transported.
A larger networked system may look like:
Lighting Console → Ethernet Switch → Laser 1 / Laser 2 / Moving Heads / Other Fixtures

Art-Net was developed to move DMX-style control across larger networked systems rather than being limited to a single physical DMX universe.
So for the operator, the biggest difference is often how control data reaches the fixture.
It does not mean the projector suddenly gains completely different optical or graphics capabilities simply because the DMX values arrived over Ethernet.
7. What Is FB4—and Why Is It Not the Same Thing as Art-Net?
This distinction can be kept simple.
Art-Net is a protocol.
FB4 is Pangolin laser-control hardware.
A Pangolin FB4 system can operate in several different modes, including QuickShow/BEYOND network control, DMX fixture control, Art-Net fixture control, standalone playback and other workflows depending on the installed hardware and configuration.
That means:
FB4 can use Art-Net.
But:
FB4 is not Art-Net.

This article only needs one important takeaway:
FB4 belongs to the controller-hardware layer, not the connector or protocol layer.
8. QuickShow, BEYOND and FB4: How Does Ethernet Laser Control Work?
For a laser operator, one common professional workflow is:
QuickShow / BEYOND → Ethernet Network → FB4 → Laser Projector
Pangolin states that in FB4's BEYOND/QS mode, QuickShow and BEYOND can connect to and control FB4 directly through an Ethernet network.
Now compare that with:
Lighting Console → Art-Net → Compatible Laser Controller / Projector
The second workflow treats the laser more like a networked lighting fixture whose defined parameters can be controlled from the console.
The first workflow is built around dedicated laser software, laser artwork and professional show programming.
Both may use Ethernet.
Both may involve the same laser projector.
But they are not the same control method.
This is why the specification:
RJ45 / Ethernet
still does not tell you which workflow you are actually buying.
9. Can a Lighting Console Control a Laser Over Ethernet?
Yes—if the pieces match.
At minimum, check:
  1. The laser or controller supports the protocol being transmitted.
  2. The console supports that protocol.
  3. The network configuration is correct.
  4. The correct universe is selected.
  5. The correct start address is set.
  6. The correct fixture profile or personality is loaded.
  7. The laser/controller is in the correct operating mode.
This applies whether you work with grandMA, Avolites, ChamSys, ONYX or another professional lighting console.
A Clearer Specification Example: M6
The Starshine M6 5W/10W RGB Moving Head Laser is useful here because its current specification does not stop at the connector name.
It lists:
Art-Net (RJ45)
along with:
  • DMX512
  • ILDA (DB-25)
  • 20/25-channel control
  • QuickShow / FB3 / FB4 compatibility information
That gives the buyer a much more useful first answer:
The RJ45 connection is specifically associated with Art-Net.
Compare that with:
RJ45
on its own.
The first tells you:
Connector + Protocol
The second tells you only that the physical connection exists.
There is still an important limit.
A product being compatible with QuickShow, FB3 or FB4 should not automatically be rewritten as:
“Built-in FB4.”
Compatible with and installed inside are different specifications.
10. Internal FB4 vs External FB4: Which Setup Makes More Sense?
There is no reason to treat internal FB4 as automatically better.
The right architecture depends on what equipment you already own and how you operate.
You Are Buying a New Professional System
Integrated network control can make sense if you are building a new setup around:
  • several laser projectors
  • QuickShow or BEYOND
  • permanent installation
  • touring inventory
  • standardized professional laser control
Fewer separate boxes can make the system cleaner and easier to deploy.
You Already Own ILDA Laser Projectors
This is where an external controller becomes much more interesting.
A rental company may already own six, ten or twenty usable ILDA laser projectors.
Replacing every projector simply to modernize network control may not make economic sense.
Instead, the workflow might be:
Computer / Network → External FB4 or Compatible Controller → Short ILDA Connection → Existing Laser Projector
This can allow the company to upgrade the control architecture while keeping useful projector inventory.
You Only Use One Simple DJ Laser
If your normal workflow is:
  • Auto
  • Sound Active
  • DMX
  • built-in patterns
  • one or two fixtures
then buying FB4 simply because it sounds more professional may add cost and complexity without solving a problem you actually have.

Do not buy more control architecture than the show requires.
11. Does FB4 Replace ILDA?
Not in every system.
A traditional laser workflow may look like:
Controller → DB-25 ILDA → Laser Projector
A networked controller can move the digital part of the system closer to the projector, reducing the need for a long ILDA signal run.
But ILDA connections can still be useful, especially when upgrading existing equipment.
A rental company can still use:
Network → External Controller → Short ILDA Cable → Existing Projector
That can be a perfectly sensible system.
There is also a broader technical point worth understanding.
Networked lighting control and networked laser-artwork transport are not automatically the same thing.
ILDA's current IDN-Stream specification, Revision 002 from July 2025, specifically addresses encoding laser-show artwork into digital data streams for networked laser applications.
You do not need to become an IDN expert to buy a projector.
DMX-over-IP and complete laser-artwork transport are different technical problems.
12. RJ45 vs ILDA vs DMX vs Art-Net vs sACN vs FB4: Which Should You Use?
Do not choose the control method that sounds most advanced.
Choose the one that solves the actual job.

A festival operating twelve projectors from FOH has a completely different problem.
More complicated does not automatically mean more professional.
13. Can Multiple Laser Projectors Share One Ethernet Network?
Yes, when the devices and controllers support the same network architecture.
But plugging all of them into a switch is the easy part.
The questions that actually cause problems are:
  • How is each projector identified?
  • Are the IP settings correct?
  • Are there IP conflicts?
  • Which universe does each device receive?
  • What is each fixture's start address?
  • Are the fixture profiles correct?
  • Are all units using the same protocol?
  • Are their controllers in the correct mode?
Compare two shows.
Setup A: Mobile DJ
  • 1 laser
  • 5-meter cable run
  • basic DMX controller
  • no custom graphics
Network control may add very little.
Setup B: Festival
  • 12 laser projectors
  • four Stage Left
  • four Stage Right
  • four Upstage
  • FOH tens of meters away
  • existing MA network
  • moving heads, media systems and other laser show equipment already using network infrastructure
Now network architecture becomes part of the buying decision.
At this scale:
“It has RJ45.”
tells the production team almost nothing useful.
They need to know:
  • protocol
  • controller
  • addressing
  • fixture profile
  • content workflow
  • failure behavior
That is the difference between a connector specification and a system specification.
14. RJ45 Connected but No Response? Troubleshoot in the Right Order
Do not start randomly changing IP addresses.
Troubleshooting becomes much faster when you work from the most fundamental question outward.
Step 1: Confirm What the Port Actually Does
Before touching network settings, ask:
Is this actually the network-control port?
Read the rear-panel label and manual.
If the RJ45-shaped connector serves another function, no IP adjustment will fix it.
Step 2: Confirm the Protocol
Your console may be sending Art-Net while the device expects a different protocol.
Or Art-Net may only be available through a specific controller option.
Step 3: Check the Controller Operating Mode
Some controllers support several operating modes.
FB4, for example, distinguishes BEYOND/QS, DMX, Art-Net, Autoplay and other functions. A controller waiting for one type of input will not necessarily respond to another.
Step 4: Check IP and Subnet Configuration
Only after confirming the correct port, protocol and operating mode should you start checking network addressing.
Make sure the transmitting and receiving devices can actually communicate.
Step 5: Check the Universe
The console may be transmitting Universe 1 while the laser controller is configured for Universe 3.
A working Ethernet link does not fix an incorrect patch.
Step 6: Check the DMX Start Address
The protocol may be correct and the network may be healthy, but the fixture may still be patched to the wrong address.
Step 7: Check the Fixture Profile
A wrong personality or channel map can create incorrect control—or make the device appear not to respond as expected.
Step 8: Check Software Compatibility
One very common mistake is:
RJ45 → Open QuickShow → Wait for Laser to Appear
If the RJ45 port only provides Art-Net fixture control and there is no QuickShow-compatible FB4/network controller behind it, QuickShow has nothing appropriate to discover.
The cable is not necessarily the problem.
The assumption may be.
15. How Should You Read a Real RJ45 Laser Projector Specification?
Looking at real specifications makes the issue much clearer.
Example 1: A10 — RJ45 Is Listed, but the Protocol Still Needs Confirmation
The current A10 Laser Light Show Projector lists:
  • RJ45 In/Out
  • DMX In/Out
  • ILDA In/Out
That is useful hardware information.
But if your project specifically requires Art-Net or sACN, the current specification does not provide enough information to infer either protocol from RJ45 alone.
The safe conclusion is:
The A10 has RJ45 connectivity, but I should confirm the protocol for my network requirement.
Not:
The A10 has RJ45, therefore it supports Art-Net.
Example 2: M6 — The Protocol Is Explicitly Identified
The M6 Moving Head Laser lists:
Art-Net (RJ45)
alongside DMX512 and ILDA.
That specification is more useful because both pieces of information are present:
Connector + Protocol
You still need to verify the rest of your workflow, but at least the first compatibility question has been answered.
Example 3: A9 — The Same Rule Applies to Smaller Lasers
The current A9 App Control Laser lists control modes including:
  • Stand-Alone
  • Sound-to-Light
  • DMX512
  • RJ45
  • ILDA
  • Bluetooth App
The current specification does not identify the RJ45 listing as Art-Net or sACN.
So the same rule applies even to a smaller DJ laser projector:
Do not guess the protocol from the connector.

16. What Should You Ask Before Buying a Network Laser Projector?
If a salesperson answers:
“Yes, it has RJ45.”
do not end the conversation there.
Ask these questions before ordering.
1. What Exactly Is the RJ45 Port Used For?
This is the first question because everything else depends on it.
2. Is It Standard Ethernet Communication?
Do not determine this from connector shape alone.
3. Does the Projector Support Art-Net?
Important if your lighting console or venue uses Art-Net.
4. Does It Support sACN / E1.31?
Important when the existing lighting network is standardized around sACN.
5. Is FB4 Installed?
FB4 compatible and FB4 installed do not mean the same thing.
6. Is FB4 Internal, External or Optional?
This affects system architecture, cabling and price.
7. Does It Work With QuickShow or BEYOND?
Do not infer this from RJ45.
8. Can My Lighting Console Control It?
Tell the supplier exactly what you use:
  • grandMA
  • Avolites
  • ChamSys
  • ONYX
  • another controller
9. Is a Fixture Profile Available?
Finding this out before show day can save a lot of programming time.
10. Can the Console Trigger Stored Graphics or Cues?
This is a fixture-control question.
11. Can I Create or Stream Custom Laser Graphics Through This Workflow?
That is a different question.
Do not combine it with the previous one.
12. Does It Support Standalone Playback?
Important for permanent installations and repeated shows.
13. Does It Support Timecode?
Important only when your show actually requires synchronized programmed playback.
14. How Are Multiple Projectors Addressed?
Critical once the system grows.
15. Is the Network Controller Standard, Optional or Dependent on Configuration?
Do not assume that every controller mentioned on a product-family page is included in the exact configuration being quoted.
16. What Happens if Network Communication Is Lost During the Show?
This is especially important for permanent installations, clubs and touring productions.
Ask what the exact controller does:
  • blackout?
  • stop output?
  • hold current content?
  • continue stored playback?
  • switch to another mode?
There is no reason to assume every controller handles network loss in the same way. Pangolin FB4, for example, provides configurable Art-Net timeout behavior in its Art-Net mode.
17. Is the Physical Network Connection Appropriate for Touring?
If the projector is going into a rental inventory, mechanical reliability also matters.
A connection that is fine in a permanent rack may be less suitable when it is plugged and unplugged every day on tour.
17. Which Laser Control Setup Should You Choose?
Start with what you need the system to do.
Not with the most expensive controller.
Do You Only Need Basic Fixture Control?
You mainly need:
  • intensity
  • color
  • pattern selection
  • position
  • simple movement
  • basic effects
Yes → DMX or Art-Net may be enough.
You do not automatically need FB4.
Do You Need Custom Logos, Graphics or Professional Laser Programming?
You need:
  • company logos
  • custom text
  • laser graphics
  • animations
  • timeline programming
  • professional laser-show content
Yes → Focus on the laser control software + controller workflow.
QuickShow, BEYOND or another dedicated laser ecosystem becomes much more important than merely having RJ45.
Do You Already Own ILDA Projectors?
Yes → Consider an external network controller / FB4 workflow.
You may be able to modernize the control system without replacing your projector inventory.
This can be especially attractive for a rental company.
Are You Building a New Permanent Networked Installation?
Yes → Integrated network control may provide cleaner cabling and simpler device management.
Still confirm:
  • Art-Net/sACN requirements
  • controller hardware
  • software
  • stored-content workflow
  • timecode needs
  • network-loss behavior
Are You a Mobile DJ With One or Two Lasers?
If your DJ laser projector spends most of its life running:
  • DMX
  • Auto
  • Sound Active
  • built-in effects
a complicated Ethernet architecture may add very little.
Spend the budget where it changes the actual show.
Are You Installing Nightclub Laser Lights?
Permanent nightclub laser lights may benefit much more from network integration when:
  • several projectors are installed around the venue
  • the console already uses Art-Net or sACN
  • cable runs are longer
  • the show is frequently reprogrammed
Here, protocol compatibility becomes a real purchasing specification.
Are You Running a Large Festival or Touring Production?
Once you have:
  • several projectors
  • FOH network infrastructure
  • MA/Avolites/ChamSys control
  • multiple universes
